A fish market in Kuwait reportedly put fake eyes on a fish to make it look “fresher.” Pictures of the bizarre-looking fish were first spotted on WhatsApp. BBC News reports images have been shared by local bloggers and newspaper Al Bayan. One image shows the fake eye slipping off to reveal the less-than-appetizing truth.

Al-Bayan reported that Kuwait’s Ministry of Commerce shut down the store after the images went viral and the shop was identified. One Twitter user quipped: “Never judge the freshness of fish by the googliness of their eyes.”

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that a rival fish market responded to the controversy by announcing that they only sold fish “without cosmetic sur-gery,” featuring an image of a fish and a selection of colored contact lenses. In July, another fish shop in Kuwait was liable of putting nails in fish to increase their weight.
